Frac Sand Dryers
Industrial Sand Dryers Designed for Optimal Efficiency
Frac Sand Dryers
Frac sand dryers are specialized equipment designed for the drying of frac sand, a type of high-purity quartz sand used in hydraulic fracturing processes for oil and gas extraction. These dryers employ various methods, such as direct or indirect heat transfer, to efficiently remove moisture from the sand particles. By achieving optimal moisture levels, frac sand dryers ensure the sand’s suitability for use in hydraulic fracturing operations, ultimately contributing to the efficient extraction of oil and gas resources.

Rotary Dryers vs. Fluid Bed Dryers
Fluid bed dryers and rotary dryers are two commonly used types of frac sand dryers. Rotary dryers are known for their simplicity and versatility, offering efficient drying and uniform particle distribution. On the other hand, fluid bed dryers provide excellent heat transfer and can handle a wide range of feed materials. When choosing between the two, it is important to consider factors such as desired drying efficiency, particle size distribution, and overall production requirements. Ultimately, the selection of the appropriate dryer depends on the specific needs and priorities of the frac sand processing operation.
Most often, we recommend choosing a rotary dryer over a fluid bed dryer because the reduction in the amount hot gas utilized to energize the system results in significant energy savings for the plant.
About the Frac Sand Industry
The Frac Sand industry emerged as a response to the increasing demand for high-quality sand in hydraulic fracturing operations. With its unique properties and ability to withstand high pressures, Frac Sand has become an essential component in the extraction of oil and gas from deep underground reservoirs. Over the years, advancements in technology and extraction techniques have further propelled the growth of the Frac Sand industry, making it a vital contributor to the energy sector.
Believe it or not, the frac sand industry in the U.S. now has the production capacity of nearly 200 million tons per year! Since technology has expanded so rapidly, the lateral runs per well used to average around 6,000 ft.; now they run about 8,000 ft and up. Moreover, the amount of sand per lateral foot used to be 1,200 tons, now it is approximately 2,250 tons per foot.
Incredibly, the industry has only been around for about 20 years. In the early stages, the specifications were very tight on not only the type of sand and its spherical nature, but also the compressive strength depending on the depth of the shale deposits. As technology kept developing and cost savings grew in focus, many other sands from other parts of the country were deemed adequate and there was a dramatic number of more local installations of these in many areas of the country, so the production of the frac sand would be near the oil drilling sites.
